…in political parties affairs

Golden Party of Zambia (GPZ) President Jackson Silavwe has accused the Executive arm of government of persistently interfering in the internal affairs of political parties, warning that such actions threaten Zambia’s democratic integrity.
Mr. Silavwe said the past four years have clearly shown that the legal framework governing political parties must be strengthened to prevent external manipulation. He noted that successive governments since 1991 have meddled in opposition affairs, but the current administration has taken this interference to “appalling levels never experienced before.”
He further accused the Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, and her presiding officers of issuing biased rulings on internal party matters, undermining parliamentary neutrality.
Mr. Silavwe also alleged that the Zambia Police Command, led by Inspector General Graphael Musamba, has been politically weaponized to serve the interests of those influencing intra-party disputes.
He added that the Office of the Registrar of Societies has been cowed by the Executive, citing the unceremonious removal of former Registrar Thandiwe as an example of intimidation.
Mr. Silavwe stressed that political parties should not operate at the whims of the ruling party but should instead be protected by the Constitution. He urged government institutions to uphold their independence and ensure a level political playing field for all.
