THE Tonse Alliance has criticized the Zambia Police Service over its recent warning against labeling covert detentions as ‘abductions’, calling the threats alarming and unconstitutional.
Tonse Alliance Spokesperson Sean Tembo accused the police of violating legal provisions by allegedly concealing detentions and denying suspects their fundamental rights.
He cited Section 253 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 87, which defines abduction as forcibly moving a person outside the provisions of the law.
Mr Tembo said lawful arrests should be conducted transparently, with detainees granted access to legal representation and communication with relatives.
He pointed to the case of Mr. Chanda Nonde, a PF sympathiser and other political detainees as examples of alleged unlawful police actions.
He warned police officers against engaging in politically motivated arrests, stating that officers who operate outside the law will be held accountable in future.
“Our primary focus remains on economic recovery should we be elected to govern next year,” he said.
