The ECZ has says it is has no intentions of changing the voter’s cards but has embarked on a programme to enhance the durability of the 2020 voters cards by improving the form and lamination. Brown Kasazo, the ECZ Chief Electoral Officer says the commission is intending to print an additional four million new voters cards for the 2026 general election, to cover for those who may have lost their cards or would want to change and have the new cards.
THE tender for the supply and delivery of more than 7.7 million voter cards forms is not intended to change and replace the current voters’ cards but to capture the more than 4 million new voters and those who may have lost their cards, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has claimed.
The ECZ has floated a tender for the supply and delivery of 7, 719, 800 Voter Card Forms and 7, 719, 800 Lamination pouches for the 2026 general election.
But when asked if the ECZ was changing the voters card, Mr Kasaro explained that the features and biometric details of the card shall not change save for the form and the lamination foil, which the commission was to improve its quality.
“We are not changing the voter’s cards. The more than 7, 7 million new voters’ cards for the 2026 includes the 3.5 million who may have lost their cards. The projection is that there may be 3.5 million new voters. Those who got cards in 2020, we need to replace. The 2020 voter’s cards are not very durable and we want to make the new cards more durable both in the form and lamination,” Mr Kasaro said.
He explained that from the Zambia Statistics Agency (ZAMSTAT), the population of Zambians who have not registered as voters was about four million and the ECZ was working at capturing the unregistered voters which would add up to more than 7.7 million.
