Security forces have dispersed more than 25,000 illegal gold miners from the Kikonge area of Mufumbwe District, following a government-led operation aimed at restoring order and environmental protection.
Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma said the government has cordoned off a 120-kilometre radius to end illegal mining activities and prepare for formal mining operations.
Home Affairs Minister Jack Mwiimbu revealed that the operation led to the seizure of over 20 vehicles, 100 gold detectors, and five firearms — including military-grade weapons. He also reported five police officers were injured during earlier riots.
Provincial Minister Robert Lihefu urged local communities to avoid illegal mining and work with authorities for legal, organized mining opportunities.
