The Department of Immigration has apprehended 255 suspected illegal immigrants during a joint clean-up operation in Lusaka.
According to Department Spokesperson Namati Nshinka, 42 individuals were released after verifying their documentation, while 213 remain in custody pending further screening. Detainees include nationals from Burundi (133), DRC (44), Rwanda (13), Tanzania (12), and others.
Meanwhile, the Lusaka Magistrate Court sentenced Blessings Tembo (29) to two years imprisonment for aiding 50 undocumented Ethiopian nationals. Tembo was arrested in Luangwa District after being found transporting the migrants in a Shoprite-branded UD Croner Truck, along with co-accused Benson Mfula (now deceased).
Mr Nshinka warned that aiding illegal migration is a serious crime and offenders will face severe legal consequences.
