COMMERCE, Trade and Industry Minister Chipoka Mulenga has urged the Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) to broaden its measurement services into the mining sector to curb the persistent under-declaration of minerals and enhance government revenue.
Speaking during the commemoration of World Metrology Day in Lusaka under the theme “Measurement for all times, for people,” Mr Mulenga expressed concern over discrepancies in mineral declarations, particularly for copper, emeralds, and gemstones.
He noted that such inconsistencies often resulted in lower revenue collections despite reported increases in productivity. Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Educational Services in the Ministry of Education, Kelvin Mambwe, called on higher learning institutions to invest in research and innovation in metrology. He said this would help improve the quality and reliability of measurement services across the country.
ZMA Board Chairperson Musamala Nyirongo reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing practical and effective solutions in measurement practices, aimed at maintaining national quality standards across industries.
