The Zambian government has reiterated its dedication to promoting children’s welfare and upholding their rights as a core part of national development efforts.
Speaking at the 2025 National Children’s Symposium held in Kitwe, Kitwe District Commissioner Mr. Oncemore Ngonongo stressed the importance of including children in decision-making processes that directly affect their lives. He emphasized that children’s rights are a legal and moral obligation, not charity.
“The enactment of the Children’s Code Act No. 12 of 2022 was a turning point,” Mr. Ngonongo said. “But rights require sustained investment in education, healthcare, nutrition and protection services.”
He called for transparent and increased budgeting to ensure children’s needs are fully met, adding that a child-centered approach to development is critical.
Meanwhile, Chief Child Development Officer Mr. Gerald Tembo encouraged children to learn about their rights and responsibilities as laid out in the Children’s Code Act, while continuing to value parental guidance.
“Knowing your rights helps you participate meaningfully in your community and future,” Mr. Tembo advised.
The symposium brought together stakeholders from various sectors to reinforce national dialogue on child welfare and further implementation of inclusive child policies.
