NATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Saboi Imboela says the UPND in its current status is incapable of winning any credible election and it is time those in government realised that they are gone and would soon be history.
Ms Imboela says the UPND has become the most unwanted political formation among Zambians and that it was largely impossible that it would retain power in 2026 through a free, fair and credible election.
Gertrude Imenda, the UPND deputy secretary general has bragged that the governing party’s popularity has blossomed due to the remarkable achievements it has scored in the last three years, that it would be difficult for it to be defeated in 2026.
But Ms Imboela has expressed concern over the ruling party’s hyping its achievements, rather than focusing on the fundamental needs of the country and its people.
“The government should be governing the country, not bragging about being popular,” Ms Imboela said, adding that the people’s needs should take precedence over political pride.”
Ms. Imboela has advised the UPND to pay close attention to what the people were complaining about such as the high cost of living, the high prices of mealie meal and the ever-increasing cost of petroleum products such as petrol currently in critical short supply.
She said for the first time ever in history, government’s policies were not inclusive and responsive to the needs of women, particularly those facing economic hardships.
Ms Imboela said the UPND government had been more rhetorical in the governance of the country and its performance in meeting the needs of the people as compared to the Patriotic Front.
The former ruling party, Ms Imboela noted, once claimed that no opposition could challenge them, but their fate changed when the people voted them out.
