TUBERCULOSIS and Malaria cases are on the increase at Lweti rural health centre in Sikongo district of Western province and members of the public are appealing to Government to consider employing a specialist at the health institution who will be dealing with the increasing cases of the two diseases.
Both healthy personnel and members of the public vomplained during the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZDFS) Sikongo outreach session that Tuberculosis and Malaria have been on the increase in the area and were happy that the ZFDS was in the area to provide specialized medical and health services.
Nawa Nyambe, Moola Mubitana, James Munalula and Steven Mutanda said they were happy that the ZFDS Team was in Lweti to provide specialized services while expressing concern on the increasing cases of Tuberculosis and Malaria
Apart from the increasing cases of Malaria, the residents of Lweti also said there was a problem of eye sight in the area, whose cause was not known.
Mr Mutanda 58 year old, said he had since been given reading glasses because he had challenges to read from a far and that he was grateful and humbled for the gesture from the ZFDS
“We are grateful to the ZFDS for making efforts to reach this place to offer specialized medical and health services to the people of Lweti. While we are grateful for the efforts, we would like to state that this place has been experiencing increasing cases of Tuberculosis and Malaria and I think we need a Specialist to be stationed here to help be dealing with this kind of diseases,” Ms Nyambe said.
“The ZFDS has been doing a good job and wherever they go, they give people hope and faith regarding their health challenges and problems. This is why government should continue to support them in various ways that they can supplement efforts of health centtes in far flung and hard to reach areas,” she said
And ZFDS Sikongo Outreach Team leader Lucas Tembo said he was humbled by the support and encouragement his team was receiving from the people in the area
Dr Tembo, who started the outreach programme at Sikongo Rural Health Centre before moving to Lweti rural health centre and to Sikushi, was hoping that the people will take advantage of the presence of the ZFDS Sikongo Outreach Team to turn so that they can be screened for various health problems.
“As I said earlier, we have set the stage for the outreach and we are hoping that people in various parts where the outreach programme was being carried will be able to turn out in big numbers to be screened for various health ailments” Dr Tembo said
