as its Council is set to deliberate in the shortest possible time given the urgency of the matter before taking an official position, says Vice President Matildah Kaoma
THE proposed amendments to the constitution may seem innocent but could have serious implications on the governance on the nation, the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has said.
Ms Matilda Kaoma, the LAZ vice president said the Council will next week convene to deliberate and interrogate the suggested changes.
She declined to share her thoughts on the matter stating that in the absence of Lungisani Zulu, the LAZ president, her comment would be deemed her own personal thinking and not that of the entire LAZ council.
“If I commented, it will be my own thoughts but that is not how LAZ works. By next week, the president (Lungisani Zulu) will be back in the country and because this is an urgent matter, we will reconvene and come up with a position as a council,” she said.
Ms Kaoma said LAZ was preview and was fully aware of the comments being made by members of the public as well as other stakeholders but will the law body will render its own position after meeting as a team.“So, in short, LAZ for now does not have a position yet but it is also possible that these amendments may seem innocent but may implications in future and the governance of this country,” she said.
But Jack Mwiimbu, the Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister said the draft bill does not contain any hidden agenda and so citizens should support the process.“We are going to have 10 people representing the youths and the disabled in addition to those who are directly elected. We are therefore calling upon all Zambians to support this progressive proposal,” Mr Mwiimbu said.
