Livingstone Mayor CONSTANCE NALISHEBO has expressed significant concern about the impacts of the ongoing 2023/2024 drought on local residents.
NALISHEBO highlighted troubling trends among vulnerable populations, particularly young girls aged 15 to 18, who are increasingly resorting to early marriages and substance abuse as coping mechanisms during this difficult time.
she emphasized that while these actions may seem like a form of relief, they are not sustainable solutions to the challenges posed by the drought.
NALISHEBO reiterated the importance of heeding government calls for a comprehensive drought response and urged the community to focus on positive alternatives.
She encouraged young girls and women to participate in government initiatives designed to support families affected by the drought.
NALISHEBO cited Programs such as the social cash transfer, the cash-for-work initiative, and the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) offer viable pathways for financial stability and empowerment.
By engaging with these programs, the mayor believes that residents can better navigate the hardships caused by the drought without compromising their futures.
