The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Zambia has sharply criticized the government’s handling of the death of former President Edgar Lungu, accusing it of creating a leadership vacuum and undermining national values.
LUNGU DEATH :
In a press statement issued Wednesday, EFF President Kasonde Mwenda said the country is in a “deep and dangerous leadership vacuum,” lacking empathy, compassion, and selfless service.
Mr. Mwenda accused President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration of failing to uphold basic humanism and ubuntu by allegedly blocking former President Lungu from traveling to South Africa for urgent medical care. He described this act as a “profound failure of humanism.”
He also condemned the government’s decision to seek legal recourse in South African courts regarding Lungu’s funeral arrangements, saying it was a betrayal of national sovereignty.
“The act of running to foreign courts over a Zambian matter reflects not only weak leadership but the surrender of our independence and dignity,” Mwenda stated.
The EFF called for national reflection and a recommitment to Zambia’s founding principles of compassion, respect, and unity, especially during a period of mourning.
The statement adds to growing criticism of the government’s role in the ongoing controversy surrounding the late president’s burial.
