The KUM’MAWA Development Coalition, UMODZI KUM’MAWA, has expressed strong opposition to Constitution Amendment Bill 7, saying it threatens Zambia’s democratic foundation.
Spokesperson Chanoda Ngwira said the proposed amendments lack broad consultation, particularly with traditional leaders, and undermine the legislative process and the will of the people. He warned that the move would silence community voices and erode the nation’s democratic values.
Mr Ngwira emphasised that the government’s failure to engage grassroots stakeholders in the law-making process risks disconnecting the leadership from the people. “A strong democracy thrives when all sectors, especially traditional and local leaders, are involved in shaping the future,” he said.
He added that widespread rejection of the bill stems from its non-transparent formulation and absence of meaningful public engagement.
Mr Ngwira cautioned that rushing the bill through Parliament could destabilise communities, marginalise traditional leadership, and breed discontent. He stressed that inclusive governance is vital for national unity and sustainable development.
UMODZI KUM’MAWA reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent, participatory legislative process and vowed to continue advocating for all Zambians to have a say in decisions affecting their lives.
