The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has partnered with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to improve solid waste management in Lusaka through the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company.
Permanent Secretary Nicholas Phiri said the collaboration is part of government’s broader strategy to enhance efficiency across the waste management value chain.
Mr. Phiri emphasized that a comprehensive approach is being taken, including the development and Cabinet approval of the Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Master Plan, which outlines systematic stakeholder engagement.
“This initiative aims to bring about organized participation from all stakeholders, including MPs, mayors, councillors, and ward development committees,” he said.
The Master Plan is expected to serve as a guide for local authorities to effectively manage waste, enhance urban hygiene, and contribute to a cleaner Zambia.
Mr. Phiri urged civic leaders to familiarize themselves with the document and take ownership of its implementation at the local level.
He added that ongoing reforms are designed to create a sustainable, environmentally friendly waste management framework that aligns with the government’s green development agenda.
The JICA partnership is seen as a key step in addressing long-standing urban sanitation challenges in the capital.
