The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Digital Trade and Services Forum has concluded with a call to harness digital platforms to boost intra-African trade.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the three day forum at Mulungushi International conference center in Lusaka, Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry, Chipoka Mulenga, emphasized the need for African countries to collaborate to drive regional integration and digital transformation.
He highlighted the significance of implementing the protocol on digital trade as a crucial step towards Africa’s economic integration and digital future.
He noted the Key outcomes such as establishing a transaction team at the AfCFTA secretariat to focus on business figures and investing in digital infrastructure.
Mr Mulenga also proposed exploring a single currency for Africa to facilitate trade and reduce capital flight.
Meanwhile, AfCFTA Secretary General, Wamkele Mene, emphasized the need for collective action to implement the protocol on digital trade.
Mr Mene noted that implementing the protocol will require a collaborative effort from governments, the private sector, youth formations, and civil society.
The Secretary General highlighted the potential of the protocol to transform Africa’s economy, citing its provisions on digital trade, data protection, and payment systems.
He emphasized that the protocol’s success will depend on the ability of African countries to work together to overcome digital fragmentation and create opportunities for young entrepreneurs and small businesses.
